software is instructions that tell these devices what to do and how to handle the commands.

software - a program that is coded to work a particular way. You can install software and use it. It is not an entity. example - windows XP, Linux, Winzip, yahoo messenger etc.
Many software comes free of cost. Hardware must be bought and never comes free.
