While shopping on Ebay for a new battery. I found the conventional Li-Ion Battery for IBM Thinkpad 600 Series, which cost about $30. I also found what is suppose to be the "NEW" Thinkpad 600/600E/600X CMOS/BIOS battery, costing $2.95. What is the difference in the two batteries and which one should I purchase?

My computer will not run unless plugged into an outlet. I want it to be portable so I can take more advantage of my wireless router. If the power cord comes out the computer shuts down.

I have 2 IBM 600e laptops. They each have 2 batteries. First one operates the computer and accessories, in place of using the wall outlet. Its what makes the laptop truely portable. Its heavy, black, and contains 8 or 9 battery cells, similar to "AA". They are very expensive to replace.
The second battery, is similar in size to a coin. It sits on the mother board itself. Its located very close to the memory chips. Has a red and a black wire lead, from the battery to the motherboard. This is known as the CMOS battery. It remembers
all the instructions required by your Bios, to start-up and continue using the laptop. These are very inexpensive. I have found a discount store that sells them for $1.00. At that price, they come without the wire leads. $4.00 dollars with the leads is a great price.
What is wrong with your 600? If it doesn't start up, then you will require the purchasing of the larger more expensive battery.
If it turns on, but, doesn't go beyond the testing, and date and time, then you need the small CMOS battery.

The cmos/bios battery is a small backup battery that keeps the computers clock running and cmos settings. The li-ion is the main battery. The cmos battery usually lasts for 5 - 10 years
