I have a dial-up connection and Windows XP. When the computer is on (not online) and I use the telephone to make or receive a call it makes a terrible continual loud squeal. The only way to stop it is to turn the computer off, or disconnect the phone line from the computer. It didn't used to do like this. I don't know what to do about it. Please help.

First answer seems correct, your modem is not disconnecting. You may try Ctrl+Alt+Delete and find the modem and select and End Task. See if it try to reconnect again. If, so, it may be Malware. Also, be sure your Dial-up is not set to automatically connect on startup, or something like that. Yahoo Messenger, if, set to start automatic may cause this to, look in Preferences to change.

It sounds like you have something on your computer that is continually connecting or trying to connect the modem.
This is rather strange to hear about, but maybe there is some malware that is trying to connect or your modem actually is connected to the Internet? Do you have your computer set up to connect to the Internet on start?
Since it is a newer issue I'd assume there is some software/trojan or something similar that is connecting your computer without your knowledge.

Your computer is trying to connect automatically. It could be auto update, any number of programs or a trojan. You need to bring up the dial-up screen and uncheck "connect automatically". Also disable automatic update in the control panel.
