The term "earth" means the planet we live on, of course. The word comes from the Middle English "erthe", which was from the Old English "Oerthe", which in turn was from the German "Erde." There no other intrinsic meaning of the word that I'm familiar with; there are other meanings associated with it now, such as "earth-tones", but they derive from the word above, and not the other way around. In short, it's a very old word whose meaning hasn't changed much over time.
