However to make the vast distances involved easier to understand and calculate, scientists use fixed values to the different orbits. These values are known as Astronomical Units and are calculated from the average distance from the earth to the sun. The distance from the earth to the sun is roughly 149,598,000 kilometres or 93,000,000 miles. This distance is then 1 AU. The distance from the earth to mars is then 1.5 AU or 1.5 times 93,000,000 miles.

It depends on when you ask, because both orbit the sun. When they are at thier closest, or at opposition, they are about .5 AU apart, or 47 million miles. When they are at thier furthest apart, on opposite sides of the sun, they are about 2.5AU or 232 million miles.
Earth 1 AU (93,000,000 mi)
Mars 1.5 AU
Opposition (1.5 - 1 AU) = .5 AU
Opposite sun (1.5 + 1) = 2.5 AU
