It really depends on which city or state you live in.
In the majority of the United States, it takes a year of school to become a paramedic, in addition to several hundred hours of clinical rotations at local hospitals, and an internship with a local ambulance company. There are a couple of states which require a two year associates degree in EMS to work in that state. In addition to school, you will have to take the National Registry licensing tests, and any state licensing requirements. The minimum age to be an EMT Basic (usually a prerequisite to the paramedic program) is 18, and the minimum to attend paramedic school is 19 (21 in some states).

The best way to get started is to attend an EMT-Basic class. This class usually lasts about a semester and is part time. It's a basic introduction to EMS and emergency care, and a prerequisite for most paramedic programs. After you become an EMT-Basic, you can volunteer with local ambulance squads, or obtain employment on an ambulance. That way you can really find out if you like it before you invest all that time and money in the paramedic program.

The salary of a paramedic really does vary from state to state, and it varies based on exactly what you do.
A firefighter/paramedic in Alabama generally makes about $50,000 a year, while the same job in Alaska pays $70,000 a year. A paramedic working for a private 911 ambulance service in Alabama earns about $40,000 a year.

Hope this helps!
