You see you cant take everything off the C drive because some of the stuff that windows uses cant be taken off unless you are a professional. So what I think you mean is how to take the important stuff. Well, you just open up ur documents folders or wherever you save stuff, plug in your external hard drive. Open up my computer and Copy and Paste. You cannot move your programs because some of the files the programs use are like somewhere in your C drive and could be difficult to find, so that when you put your programs back they might not work. So your only hope is to re-install everything(except of course your documents, music, movies, downloads, stuff that's not related directly to windows or is a program), if you want your computer in the best condition and all your programs working.

To transfer everything back you just create folders in your now formated C Drive and move the corresponding things on ur external HD to their correct folders.

If you need help on formatting. Feel free to e-mail me at popnbrown@gmail.com

Files, data, etc: easy peasy - just hook up a USB drive, dump the data on it, easy.

Programs: not a chance. You absolutely definitely positively MUST have every single installation CD for every bit of software on your machine (at least, the bits you want to keep) before you start. Make a very comprehensive list. Check the "add/remove programs" bit under Control Panel to make sure you've remembered everything. Gather all the CDs in a pile. If some of the software is downloaded, make sure you're not just about to replace a free version for a paid-for one.

PS perldude6 - Norton Ghost won't solve the problem of copying back programs. Ghost is for if you are dumping an old hard drive and putting on a new one, but you want your computer to be exactly the same once you've finished. Ghost is good for some things but it can also break your PC better than just about anything in existence, so be careful!

yes, you can transfer all of your documents. most external hard drives just plug into your machine via the USB post. Simply plug it in. If you a newer computer, your computer will automatcally find the new hardward. If not, you may have to install it.

Once you are ready to go with the external hard drive, click on My Computer, then click on the C drive. Now all you have to do is drag and drop from the C drive window to the hard drive window.

This is a really good idea to do, you should always have everything backed up.

You can get some good deals on memory now. You should be able to find a 250MB drive for about $100.

I use Norton Ghost. It is great for things just like this.

Get Ghost. (Download from Limewire)

Make an image of your C Drive.

Reinstall windows.

Install Ghost.
Browse Image of old C Crive, and copy and past anything you want to keep.

Have Fun!
