The tire companies say they will not replace a 70 inch tire with a 60 inch tire and my mechanic friend says he does it all the time and never had a problem. What is the truth?

my hubby said yes you can - 1 is just wider then the other - they both have to be the same size for the rim -- like a 70/15 and a 60/15 the 15 is the rim size and that is what counts.

first bonnieann they are not 70 inch tires it is the aspect ratio of tire height to tread width. this change is posible on almost any car . its just a matter of making sure nothing hits the suspension after the change over also make sure your rims are wide enough to accept a 60 series tire . a 60 series will offer a better handling car in most casses . just go to a reputable tire dealer and ask questions . the most expensive tire are not always the best for your car. if you are not a hotrod then a speed rating of h should be the highest you need.

OK, you can change tire size. Off-road enthusiasts do it all the time. However, what you need to remember, this will change the performance of your vehicle! It will likely affect handling, traction, gas mileage, possibly braking performance, acceleration, etc. Keep this in mind when making the decision to change your tire size.

Can it be done? Yes.

Why it shouldn't be done. Undue wear on your power train (more revolutions to cover the same distance) The smaller tire may not be able to handle the load. Your Speedometer will always say you're going faster then you really are.

no you cant. if you are changing tire sizes it is better to go up a size not a size down. and also if you are changing both wheel and tire you must see what weight they handle and if it is less then car recommended then dont do it.
