A few thoughts:

1. Do you live in a town that has a yarn store? Often there are classes at Michaels, Hancock Fabrics, other major craft store chains. Plus, they also have them at local yarn stores. Check your yellow pages.

2. If getting out of the house regularly is tough, try the local library. Search your library's catalogue online or drop in and see what they have for knitting how-to books.

3. try the website listed above, or this one: http://learntoknit.lionbrand.com/.

4. Then, get yourself a pair of needles (get size 9 or 10--easier to start with), and some cheap yarn and just practice until you are comfortable with it. After some practicing, you will notice that the size of your stitches will become more consistent. Now you're ready to make a project.

5. Don't give up! There will be times when you make errors and get really angry. Do not give up! Even experienced knitters blow it sometimes.

have fun!

Knitting is fun!

The first stitches of your project are created by casting on. The rest of the stitches are based on two simple stitches called knit stitch and purl stitch.
The knittinghelp website (http://www.knittinghelp.com) has wonderful videos that are not only clear but also FREE! I actually learned knitting by watching these videos; it is not hard at all. Also, lionbrand.com has a downloadable PDF document that teaches knitting!

The needles and other materials you would need depend on the project you choose, and are always mentioned at the beginning of any pattern.
Also, there are a lot of brilliant websites that offer free patterns, some of which are categorized according to your skill level, like lionbrand, knitty and berroco.
Here are my favorite pattern websites:

1.http://www.berroco.com/pattern_library.h...
2.http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/di...
3.http://www.lionbrand.com
4.http://www.dailyknitter.com/patterns.htm...

*The Lionbrand website requires you to actually register before you can view the patterns. It is a one-time, free registration.

Enjoy knitting :)

With two needles and some yarn.

If you are trying to learn how to knit, purchase a book. If you are trying to learn how to knit something specific, get a pattern.

Are you asking for instruction, or asking others about their preferred methods?

If the latter, I prefer knitting in the Continental style on circular needles. My favorite needles are Addi Turbo circulars. I once clocked 64 sts/min plain knitting, using these needles, they really are turbo!

You can buy instructions books or you can go to the libarary and get one of their books - it's too hard to explain with such a limited space - good luck and you can make wonderful items and gifts!@
