Let the ball do the work, just nudge it ahead of you enough that you can keep up with it, but still be able to pull it back or pass off if need be. To receive a pass on your "backhand", you should try to cushion the ball or absorb its speed with your stick. To do this place the stick directly in front of your right foot, slightly angle your blade towards the direction that the pass is coming from. This will prevent it from bouncing off if the blade is straight, and jumping over if the blade is angled like a ramp for the pass. As the ball nears ease your grip, and when contact with the blade is made, move your stick across your body with the motion of the ball, cradling the pass until you have control, or slowed its speed enough that you can quickly step to your left and have it in a better position for a shot or pass.

You need to be able to skate well. When I was 14 I started taking speed skating, and I had already played for 7 years before that. I was one of the fastest skaters on my team (which is important for a defenseman , contrary to what Jim told you). Stick handling comes with time, but buying one of those street hockey pucks will help you along a lot quicker. This might make you look like a fruit, but roller-blading helps develop important leg muscles so you might want to try that also. If your coming from a sport like soccer or basketball, you'll need to play more aggressive. Practice as much as possible and good luck.
