In most western culture, it's the third finger (the "ring finger") of the left hand (or the fourth digit, if you count the thumb). There are a few exceptions, like Greece, Poland and Spain - they wear wedding rings on the right hand.
In India, the traditions that wear wedding rings, wear them on the right hand (however, some Indian cultures have toe rings that represent marriage rather than finger rings).
In North America, it's the ring finger of the left hand. Engagement rings are usually worn on the left hand as well, although some people wear a wedding ring on the right hand when they are engaged and move it to the left hand when they are married (this is German tradition, I believe).
Most women have two rings, an engagement ring (usually with a diamond or other precious stone: emeralds, sapphires and rubies are also popular engagement ring gems) and a simpler "wedding band" (often plain, but may also be carved, engraved or have small dimonds set *in" the band rather than *on* the band). The more common tradition is to wear both rings on the left hand after marriage, but a lot of women wear the engagement ring on the left hand during the engagement, and then move it to the right hand for the wedding, and then wear the wedding band alone on the left hand to signify their married state. Men don't usually get enagement rings (although a few do, albeit in a similer style), and wear only their wedding band after marriage. If a man wears another ring - a class ring, a lodge ring, or a pinky ring - it will be on his right hand.
In the American midwest, high school students often get "class rings" which are engraved to show the year they are due to graduate. These are worn on the right hand, but if two students start a serious relationship, they exchange their rings and if their hands are close to the same size, will wear their sweetheart's ring on thier left hands (some times that means the boy will have to wear the girl's ring on his pinky and the girl will have wear the boy's ring on her middle finger). More commonly however, the girl's ring will be too small for the boy's hand, so he will wear it on a chain around his neck, and she will will fill the inside of his ring will foam or tape until it has a small enough opening to fit her hand. Then she will wear it on her left hand.
If the couple breaks up, the rings are returned. However, if they decide to marry and become engaged, the boy will usually give the girl an engagement ring to replace his ring on his betrothed's finger and she will begin wearing his class ring on a chain around her neck as well.
In some areas of the United States, if the couple is young, or the young man feels he is not yet finacially able to propose marriage, but this is his intention, he may give the girl a simple ring, called a "promise ring" that she may choose to wear on any finger she likes, but which is often worn on the index, middle or ring finger of the left hand. She wears it until it is replaced by an engagement ring.

What EACH finger represents and meaning? huh....
Well there's the thumb... It's opposable so that we can grip stuff
Then the pointer finger, used to ahem, point
Then your middle finger, handy for flipping people off
The ring finger, obviously for rings. The left ring finger is for wedding bands.
The pinky - the pinky doesn't have much purpose that I have figured out
