Discipline is used to refer to a developmental process through which the recipient gains the ability to deny personal indulgence in order to achieve some other end. Punishment is merely negative reinforcement. Often, disciplining an individual relies on a form of punishment.

Discipline is a positive way to teach a child self-control and confidence. The key to positive discipline is encouragement, teaching a child what behavior is okay and what behavior is not okay. The focus is on what children are expected and allowed to do. Positive discipline is concerned with how a child is behaving in the present and how a parent or caregiver wants the child to behave in the future.

Positive discipline helps children learn self-control and take responsibility for their own behavior better. They will behave independently, and respect themselves and others. Positive Discipline is a process, not a single act. It teaches children how to get along with other people.

Punishment represents one end of a very broad spectrum of discipline methods. Punishment may be physical, as in spanking, hitting, or causing pain. Or it may be psychological, as in isolation or shaming. Punishment focuses on past misbehavior and offers little or nothing to help a child behave better in the future. When punishment is the form of discipline, the person who punishes the child becomes responsible for the child's behavior. Children who are frequently punished instead of encouraged, learn that those they depend on the most for love and care can also inflict physical and psychological pain on them.

To punish is to reprimand someone for their actions, to discipline is to correct the action by developing a consequence for the action. Punishment is often hurtful to a person physically or mentally. Discipline is meant to correct the behavior by showing other ways to act. For example: If a child throws spit balls in my classroom(I am a teacher), I am going to give that child a consequence for their actions by moving them to the front of the class, talking to them about their choices, and developing a consequence for them doing the spit ball throwing. In my opinion, if I were punishing the child they would be in the office and getting swats (which thankfully we do not do anymore in the school system I am at.) I have more positive interaction with the children because I am taking the time to explain to them what they have done, what the consequence of that choice will be, and having an opportunity to teach them.

Discipline is when you prevent other from punishment. My point is, discipline is more than necessarily....with no discipline there is no organized life...and without that no one can move forward....but when someone doesn't respect the discipline then comes the punishment....eventhough thay are softer ways for punishment....I'm against hard punishments.

good luck.

I actually gave this question some serious thought.
Discipline teaches us right from wrong. Punishment is the consequence for when we fail to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
You get one (punishment) when you don't have the other (discipline).

Discipline, literally translated, is "to teach". A disciplinary action should have the recipient receive a positive lesson so he/she can move forward from a mistake. Punishment is just that-punitive. It is meant to remove a privilege, nothing more.

Discipline needs punishment to be truly effective. Punishment needs discipline, to prevent it from becoming torture.

"Discipline" is the act of entering into an accord with once self or another person to accomplish a physical or mental goal.
"Punishment" on the other hand is an act of deprivation or physical injury by a person entering into an accord with once self or another person to accomplish a physical or mental goal because the recipient lacks the "Discipline" to do so by himself.

Punishment is what happens when the discipline didn't work, or you didn't heed the discipline.

In short one is a criteria and the other is a consequence.
