"Savage Beauty" a biography about Edna St. Vincent Millay written by Nancy Milford. It is a detailed look into the life and writing of one of the most gifted and sadly nearly forgotten poets in American history. It is unconscionable that her work is not as widely read as it was when she was first dazzling the world. Her poetry is a melding of styles, the romance of Tennyson and lyrical beauty of Coleridge and Wordsworth with the passionate expressions of a woman whose passions left her far ahead of her time.

All on this list are non-fiction, unlike "The DaVinci Code" mentioned above.

1. "In the heart of the sea: the tragedy of the whaleship Essex"
Most popular book on this list, among my HS seniors. About a whaling ship that sinks in the early 1800's in the Pacific Ocean. Several life boats get away. How will they survive to reach land?

2. "The Devil in the White City"
about a mass murderer living in Chicago during the World's Fair of 1893

3. "Fast Food Nation"
Good way to start a diet. You won't want to eat at McD's for a while.

4. "Guns, Germs, and Steel"
Challenging but good for advanced students. Why are some societies rich while others are not?

5. "Black Boy" by Richard Wright

6. "The Professor and the Madman: The Making of the Oxford English Dictionary"
J.R.R. Tolkien worked on this dictionary, but he's not in this book.

7. "Nicked and Dimed: On not getting by in America." Why you want to stay in school and get a good job

Have fun with your reading!

One non-fiction book that I feel you must read, is the "The World Is Flat: A Brief History Of The Twenty First Century". by Thomas L Friedman (a three time Pulitzer Prize Winner)
"The World Is Flat is Thomas L. Friedman's account of the great changes taking place in our time, as lightning-swift advances in technology and communications put people all over the globe in touch as never before-creating an explosion of wealth in India and China, and challenging the rest of us to run even faster just to stay in place."

Another book, that should be a gr8 read is iWoz by Steve Wozniak(the co-founder of Apple computers). This is a little about the book.. "From Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It "

the longest epic in the world-the Mahabharata.
if you read it minutely, they say,all the other plots in all the novels
get reflected at somepart of the epic.in short........if it is not to be found in Mahabharata................you can not find it elsewhere.
Moreover, Bhagavadgita is a part of it.
finally just the two-The Ramayana,The Mahabharata.
please read true translations by scholars.
