The more arrogant Americans become in championing their/our culture as superior over all others, the more we are hated. For example, President Bush refuses to meet with the heads of Iran and Syria to discuss enlisting their help with the Iraq situation because they don't support every facet of the the plans the US have for the Middle East. In spite of the fact that Syria and Iran are a vital part of that area and the US is NOT! Americans must learn to celebrate diversity and respect other cultures as being valuable even if they do not mimic the US. And this does not mean we bend over for terrorists, it means we start showing some respect if we want to deserve respect from others.

We don't hate America or Americans. We hate the governments you keep electing. I know none of the rest of us are perfect either, but when the UN told your government not to invade Iraq and you did it anyway, we all couldn't help feeling a little scared. Remember, you guys are a superpower; you have nuclear weapons, the third largest population in the world, and without you international politics goes down the drain. We're scared because the UN, which has more or less worked (we didn't have a third world war afterall), worked because the US played with us. Now that the US wants to go start its own game of international politics (mostly invading people and threatening sovereign states), the rest of us are starting to get a little irked. Where does "America" get off thinking it can jeopardize world peace to further its own agenda? We're not impressed. We have nothing against you all personally (and to be honest some of us are holding our breath waiting to see how the Democrats do now that they've won control of Congress, although I have no big expectations of them). I love America, it's a beautiful country full of great people. You guys just have a problem electing sensible leaders.

Edit - as a response to DJL2, if you are an American you have no place commenting on this topic. How could you possibly know?

That is simple paranoia.. I have lived in a number of foriegn countries during most of my adilt life since 1988. No one hates America. They dislike the way America behaves. and they have a point. It is our inability to understand that, that creates difficulties within ourselves.

America creates her own problems, Our desire for outcomes beneficial to us is more important than potential hurt and death that our actions bring to so many. Under the circumstances it is understandable that people protest against the so called "American way " of doing things.

During the 90's (Clinton Years) America had a pretty good reputation abroad. I remember several specific incidents where Europeans would compliment America to me, and talk about how much they liked our president. Rather ironic when you recall how Americans at home felt about him. Most of what people say to me today is that they like America and Americans, what they do not like is American policy and President Bush. The Europeans were not all that crazy about Reagan either, but that did not stop the Americans from electing that amiable dunce two times to the presidency. So don't be easily fooled by what appears to you to be hostility, it is nothing more than debate.

You would be amazed at how many people there are that support America in what she is doing. Regardless of the outcome.

That tells me that things are rarely as they appear without an indepth look.

When Germany found Americans in the way, they found it popular to hate Americans--before both World Wars.

When Japan found Americans in the way before WWII, they found it popular to hate Americans.

When South Korea wouldn't conform to the communist leaders of North Korea and America held the country in its defense, then it became popular to hate Americans.

When South Vietnam wouldn't conform to the communist leaders of North Vietnam and America held the country in its defense for almost two decades, then it became popular to hate Americans.

When Spain's jealously exercised antagonism against Americans in our trade and interests in Cuba and the Philappines then we acted. Interestingly, we discovered that the Cubans and Philippinos were quite pleased with Americans after the Spanish were defeated and gone.

Mexico has long had a beef with Americans, except those that were spending money with them. So hatred against Americans has been popular there for years.

Even England and Canada had a period of strong antipathy with Americans after the Revolutionary War and its revisit in the War of 1812. I was reading recently where if cattle rustlers took their stolen herds to Canada in the late 1700s and early 1800s, then if the theives were non-Americans they were fined and released, but if they were Americans they were hung for treason.

People have always found some reason to hate Americans. Ask the Native Americans.

My guess is you mean the USA as there are 28 or so American countries (Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc)

Internationally -
I think it became easier when we - in our own view - "won" the cold war and The USSR & Eastern Europe communist nations fell apart. However, unlike the end of World War 2 - we did very little to help those Nations rebuild.
Over the years we have played small nations as the chess pieces - pawns more specifically - in our "cold war" with the USSR. It continues with China, N Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and a few others, but in much smaller ways because communist China, is much more involved in the US economy and owns a fair amount of our national debt - than was USSR/Russia and Eastern Europe ever was, or permitted to be.
With this cold war victory the USA became unfocused as we no longer had an enemy to prepare to do battle with and we no longer needed the pawns and for the most part abandon them.

The US government invented new a enemy or two and began thinking and acting as if we had earned the right to be the worlds police force. In the process stepping on, and ignoring, the rights of other sovereign nation/states because the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard are not a Police Force - they are a War Force - and a damn good one at that. Their sole job is to defend and protect the United States of America and by mutual defense treaties, we join with others, to defend and protect our friends (N.A.T.O. is one example).
Sometimes we regained our "focus" - when Kuwait was invaded for example and we cooperated with other nations to defend, protect those unable to defend themselves - it was a war and we as a - collection of cooperative nations - won. We needed each other - different national air spaces, air ports, military bases, money, and yes US military might and equipment - but never forget that many other nations had military personnel and equipment there - some of which we had never worked cooperatively with before - and more sadly, since.

As a "Police Force" - our national defense military forces have not always done so well - they are not a "Police Force" - and it is those... not done so wells... that have angered many people - here at home and internationally.
Be disappointed with those we elect and allow to made the mistakes in our name and do something about it - like speak up.
Just my opinion - Take care

I don't hate America or Americans. I just don't agree with some of the choices they take.

Most of the choices America make, whether it is good or bad, affect the whole world.. that may be why it seems "popular" to hate America.

It has always been around. It is called envy. The envy USA success, they envy the USA's strong economy where someone can come to the USA with a few pennies in their pocket and wind up a millionaire. They envy the huge size of this country where as in Europe for example which is cramped and has poor climate. They envy American individualism. The eny relatives and ancestors who left the old world for the new.
Europeans I have found are generally attracted and repelled by American society and culture.

You can never love someone you envy.

First of all no good deed goes unpunished. The US has been in charge(whether we want to be or not) of taking care of everyone else for just about 150+- years. But then we also have under 30% of the whole world's population and use over 85% of the world's resources...
The US working poor contributed the bulk of $280 BILLION in charity last year and most went out of the country(like we do not need it here?) You cannot be perceived as; let alone actually BE, the strongest power point in the world and not expect to be disliked passed the point of hatred.

Hating Americans have been so since the House of Stewart put the Pilgrims out of England. Then we poured their tea out in the river and denied them tax money, then Paul Revere yelled the British were coming , then Independence day 1776.

Then Wilson gave Russia 14 steps because they bombed our ships then Pearl Harbor and the Japanese were Westernized then, our Twins were violated and we are still hated.

Don't push me because I'm close to the edge I'm trying not to loose my head. It makes me wonder what keeps me from going under...

So hating Americans have always been so. From the beginning of her existence
