If a person is incapable of working due to physical or mental disabilities, then they should receive supplementation, but they should still have to do something to contribute to society to earn the supplements.
And, I agree with Spud, who gave the answer above, about people wrongly imprisoned.

I think society owes every person a living.
In Europe there are different types of incentives for people to get their life back on track and to start making their own way to life again. But people will always want to live and if society doesn't help them out when things go wrong or times are rough, some might see no alternative than crime.
I don't believe in hand outs or people leaching of government but I do believe everyone can make mistakes and it's not a bad thing we as a community try to lend a hand, pick them up and make them happy working citizens again.
Our crime rates are far lower than in the US.That costs money to,tax payers money not to mention the pain and stress to the victims.

I think in the case of someone being wrongly imprisoned (of which there has been many), the government should provide that person with a life income. If you take someone and throw them in prison and then 20 years later find out he was innocent, he should get more than back pay. The loss of quality of life alone should be worth a adequate pension.
I like the concept of "A hand up, not a handout."

A handout is only OK when a person is down and out, and only for the length of time it would take for a person to get back on their feet. Handouts for life are only OK when a person cannot ever recover due to physical or mental conditions beyond their control.

I think the war veterans who are unable to work due to an injury they sustained defending our country are due financial support. It is appalling to see men with missing limbs or mentally unstable go through their lives in misery while people do nothing. We owe our freedom and quality of life to these people.

Even if you are against war you are able to have those opinions because our country is free. Our freedom is protected by these veterans.

When they are mentally or physically unemployable. That is not a point of debate. NOW the real problem presents its self...that of definition. The welfare organization yardsticks are all over the map... as are the mentalities of the people holding them.

False imprisonment. I've seen cases where someone looses EVERYTHING and gains HUGE legal bills because of mistaken identity. The gov't should pay that back.
Handout's? If someone is TRYING...help them help themselves. If someone sits at home and collects checks, doesn't count, no help. Single moms...they need help. Disabled, they need help.
