My dad is in his early 50's. He loves the outdoors...floating, fishing, camping. He loves to be outside. He is more of a homebody. He and my step-mom don't go out much they just enjoy being home together. He's not big into technology or trends. He's got pretty much everything and I run into this problem every Christmas of what to get him. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Look for something he enjoys that isn't a huge hobby. If it's a hobby he'll often buy whatever he likes, and it's often too specialized to be easily understood ("NO! Not the A-type slot bucket! The AA type!")

Look for little things...if he's a regular coffee drinker, you could pick him up some Blue Mountain coffee (make sure he has a coffee grinder first!). If he likes to read the comic page in the newspaper, buy him a collection of his favorite comic strips. If he's into trivia, buy him a copy of 'Uncle John's Bathroom Reader' (badly named but fantastic books, sell for about $20).

The key is to show some thoughtfulness while still getting him a present he won't have bought for himself. Are his slippers looking worn and tattered? Does he like the Beatles (their 'new' album, Love, is a good choice)? Does he sneak some of your mother's candy when she's not looking? Buy him some of his own. :)

Have a Merry Christmas!

Ah yes that would be hard if you hardly know him. Does he BBQ if so maybe a good BBQ tool set or BBQ light. Does he Drink maybe just a good bottle of wine, or if he drinks beer, you can get a box set of 10 different beers I think for about $29? Can't think of anything else at the moment but if I think of something better I'll let you know..ciao now.

Here is an idea that you more than likely haven't thought of, try spending some time with him, even though you're a girl you would be thrilling him if you give him a coupon for him to teach you to fish, or to take you camping. I know that he is going to be thrilled to have some father/daughter time with you. Relish it while you can, I know that some of the best memories I have of my late father are when I would help him out on his and his brother's farm working hay and cattle.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Not sure if you have any float camps around your area. But you could call up the float camp and get two weeks worth of camping and canoeing gift certificates. Since it is off season you may get a great deal. Then grab up some little camp stuff, lantern, ect. bug spray. Put the gift certificate with it and they can use them to go camping this coming summer. Good luck...

I have the same problem with my dad every year, and this year I bought him a telescope, a book on astronomy, and his own personal flying saucer (I found it at Target - it's an infra-red remote controlled flying thing from national geographic). That way, he has an excuse to be outside when there are no mosquitoes, and he might actually learn something without leaving the house.

One of the things I bought my brother-in-law was a traveling fishing pole set - at the sports stores - about $50. It folds down to a small triangle, weights under 2 pounds and he keeps it in his trunk. Just in case he wants to go fishing.

Or, how about a DVD or DVD set of his favorite movies - like the James Bond set.

There's this neat tool out now that's part needlenose pliers (fly fishing) part knife, and part flashlight. Always handy. I'd love one, myself, and I'm pretty sure he'd like one too. I saw one at Target, but don't remember the price. Under $10, though.
