In the Revolutionary War, many died so that we could establish a democracy here.
Many African-Americans died in the struggle for the right to vote. There were women also who died during the Suffrage Movement.
And there are people all over the world throughout history who have died in order to set their people free from oppression & establish self-governance and democracy. Few peoples in world history have not had to fight & die for freedom at some point.
As to what the phrase means, I'm guessig we all will take slightly different meanings from it. But basically, it means that people have sacrificed their lives so that they & future generations could enjoy rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's something worth fighting and dying for.
