Should Iraq be partitioned?

Should we create three separate, independent states? Kurdistan in the north, Iraq in the middle, and West Iran in the South. Do you think that will solve the problem or worsen it?

Yes, Iraq should be partitioned. That will make the mission easier for the U.S troops. " Divide Conquer"!!!!
And that's what the American administration wanted in the " new middle east".

No it shouldn't. You have three cultures under one flag fighting each other for power in a newly formed government and especially the Sunnis who not only want Saddam back in power,but are the main insurgents firghting the Allied troops to leave Iraq altogether.
The Kurds,who were Saddams favorite targets for chemical experiments are trying to unite with Kurds from Turkey to make their own state. Do you honestly think Turkey and Iraq are going to give up land to make this a possiblity? Hold your breath on that one.
And last but not least,you have the Shiites from Iraq who sympathize with the Shiites from Lebanon to also form their own state.
Forming seperate states would worsen the problem and truly drive the region into a civil war that would take generations to end and would also destablize the surrounding region.

That would be a good start, then, instead of taxing and handing out welfare, partition off large areas of land for individuals and families ( NOT rich developers) to homestead, about 3-5 acres each. The only government responsibility then would be to supply water and subsistence grain. Let them live like they choose, instead of enforcing "democratic" political evolution. They are hard working tribal religious, get used to it, give them some land and leave them alone, an alternative to "urban ghettoization" and exploitation.

I must agree with Roch Cop. It should be up to the Iraqis. I think the fear is: If the country was divided in three, would the people in those territories opt to be annexed by Iran and Syria? Since both of those countries are behind the unrest in the Middle-East, it would be counterproductive to our efforts if things moved in that direction.

Very bad idea.Turkey does not want and will not tolerate a Kurdish state at its border and they do have a say seeing they are a NATO member and ally of the US.
Then this option is also discussed in the ISG rapport and it states clearly one of the parts doesn't have recourse's at all so it's not sustainable on its own.
Uninformed,uneducated idea that sounds good only to people who have no idea of the global political implications

They only way it would work is with taxation and relief programs and that would bother people.

They'd still need to have this concept, even without the partitions.

Paritioning wouldn't work because Shia and Sunni live in both areas, you'd have to relocate them. That wouldn't work at all!

What's going to probably happen is a strong government will come in and clamp down and end the free press and that will be it.
