Dear Kaytlin C,

You want seven reasons why children should be able to wear coats in school. It will help you out if you see the reasons why coats might be banned--and then argue against those reasons as well.

Here we go:

1) Coats conceal weapons and allow folks to hide things after they've been stolen.

Agree with this statement. They do provide a nice hiding spot. However, don't tell your school that "kids are gonna do it anyway". WRONG ANSWER. Tell your teachers that you have every trust that the children at your school are NOT using jackets for that purpose, and that it would shock and sadden you to find out if someone did.

2) Coats provide protection against the cold.

No one can argue this against you. This is the very purpose for a coat. Therefore, it's almost silly to state this. We all know what coats are for. What you should be thinking about is, why a coat? Why not a sweater or a long sleeve shirt? The answer is that coats are convenient. Long sleeve shirts often get tangled, and we don't want young ladies exposing their stomachs and chests as they try and take them off.

3) Coats are part of today's fashion and self-expression.

Coats have long been associated with high class and society. Old time actresses and actors wore long cashmere coats or overgarments. Hip-hop pioneers wore jackets and coats. The problem is that some folks have changed the original intent of a fashion statement and used them to send gang messages, such as in a Raiders jacket or a red jacket. Come to a compromise...argue that you want to be able to wear a coat, but that you won't permit coats that promote gang associations. Local police probably know the typical coats. Not only does this bring you to a negotiation point that is win-win, but it also protects unsuspecting children who may not know that they are wearing a gang related object. Allowing kids the freedom of self-expression enhances learning, and builds self-esteem.

4) Coats are cheap.

Generally, coats are cheaper than woolen sweaters or specially designed long sleeve shirts. This allows parents to devote more of their hard earned money to supporting school events. Also, if they are banned, parents will have to spend money to replace the child's existing wardrobe, and they may not have that money to spend.

5) Teachers wear coats.

Now, this is a tricky one. You don't see teachers wearing midriff shirts or baggy pants...if you did, the kids probably wouldn't do it any more because it wouldn't be cool...old people are doing the same thing. But, teachers do wear coats. They wear rain jackets etc. Children emulate their role models. Why should their be a double standard between teachers and students? There shouldn't...but one exists for the simple fact that you ARE a student. For instance, teachers can leave at lunch, and maybe students can't. However, if a teacher will be wearing a coat similar to one that is banned by the school for a student, what message does that send?

I know you said seven reasons, but these main five cover all the bases pretty well. You could say, "coats are more durable", "coats look better" etc, but that would be just pulling qualities that already fall in the above categories.

Good luck with your arguments, and practice before you go up against the school staff.

Regards,

Mysstere

I never wear jackets, long sleeve shirts, or shorts. I am standing out in the snow having a snowball fight in my shorts. I am a nudist and I dont liek clothes at all but obviously i have to wear them.

However I think kids should be able to wear ANYTHING they want to school ESPECIALLY if its to keep them warm or comfortible. If your in a class and your not comfotible because they wont let you wear a jacket then how are you going to learn? I never knew it was agaisnt the rules to wear a jacket an I think its rediculous it is. If you get sick does the school really want you to be able to blame them? For better learning conditions you have the right to wear a jacket as long as oyu are nto distracitng the class.

because they have a right to. my school doesnt let you wear jackets either and i think its ridiculous. especially since heat is not eavenly distribuited through out the school. you could be super hot in one class room. and in the next your teeth are chattering.

i think they should allow jackets in school because:
1) freedom of choice. they let me wear short skirts but not jackets ?!?! random
2) its notdistracting in any way
3) why not ?
4)it gets cold
5) so you can have something to take off if it gets super warm in one classroom
6)its a way of expressing individuality
7) if the reson they dont like it is because they can hid things in their pockets ( weed, stolen items, etc) trust me. if kids want to deal pot or steal. they will find a way to do so. banning jackets wont stop them.

hope it helped =]

Because they can get cold and catch a chill. I wear jackets/coats a lot, now that it is winter. Our school sells jackets.

I think they should be able to wear them to school, but then store them in lockers or something like that. Unless there is a problem with the heating of the school in which case I would welcome them to wear jackets!

I stay in a small city and the ladies right here try this each and all the time. i'm uncertain if that's common for city-dwellers although. i think of it seems ok - yet skinny denims and residences or ankle boots might in all probability artwork extra suitable.

1) some schools, like mine, don't have good heating systems. some rooms are really cold.
2) the non-puffy ones aren't a distraction
3) they are part of the fashion

we become cold

it takes up less space in my locker

i can put stuff in the pockets

i can use it for a pillow in my BORING history class

in other words, they should just let us wear our coats. it'd save them a lot of complaining.
