I thought it was just offices? Not a tourist attraction, maybe I'm wrong

It is officially called 30 St. Mary Axe or the Swiss Re tower but affectionately nicknamed the gherkin.

There is a bar on the 40th floor however it is for residents and their guests only.

However, surely it is better to be in a bar high up with a view of the Gherkin than in the Gherkin with a view of Tower 42?

Tower 42 (Formerly the Natwest Tower) is next to the gherkin and houses a very posh restaurant by Gary Rhodes and a similarly exclusive bar. http://www.vertigo42.co.uk/ visit this instead.

Yes, if you are very very eager:
once a year there's an architechture event, in which lots of building which are usually inaccessable to the general public are free to view, and the gherkin is one of them.
HOWEVER, demand is high, and some of them require pre-booking in advance. I wanted to see it this year, but by the time i tried to book ut was all full.
