Go to www.lionbrand.com. They have a whole section that tell you how to knit...and it's free. The instructions are great. They also have some beginner free patterns too. I would try a scarf first, with a basic knit stitch....it's so easy. I love knitting...I started a few years ago. The choices of affordable and fun yarns can be overwhelming. When you find a yarn you like, check the label. It will show you what size needles to use with that particular thickness of yarn. I usually use a size 10 or 11 when I want a fairly loose knit...something that will drape as a scarf nicely. But check the label. The larger the needle size, the faster the proejct will go. Anyone in the craft store will be able to help you get started too. All you will really need to get going is needles and a ball of yarn. Good luck!!!!

The size of needles you get depend on the yarn that you purchase. The yarn you buy should have guage and somewhere near that it should have the size needle that would be best for that yarn. Needles are labled in two different measurements there is the US measurement and the UK (or mm) measurement.
When I started learning how to knit, I purchased a kit that had a great book with illustrations and written instructions for beginners and it had several different easy patterns. The kit also had needles and yarn with it already. The most important thing you need to start knitting is a good book of instructions.

Knitting is such a wonderful craft! A scarf would be a good way to start knitting. The first stitches of your project are created by casting on. The rest of the stitches are based on two simple stitches called knit stitch and purl stitch.
The knittinghelp website (http://www.knittinghelp.com) has wonderful videos that are not only clear but also FREE! I actually learned knitting by watching these videos; it is not hard at all. Also, lionbrand.com has a downloadable PDF document that teaches knitting!
The needles and other materials you would need depend on the project you choose, and are always mentioned at the beginning of any pattern.
Also, there are a lot of brilliant websites that offer free patterns, some of which are categorized according to your skill level, like lionbrand, knitty and berroco.
Here are my favorite pattern websites:

1.http://www.berroco.com/pattern_library.h...
2.http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/di...
3.http://www.lionbrand.com
4.http://www.dailyknitter.com/patterns.htm...

*The Lionbrand website requires you to actually register before you can view the patterns. It is a one-time, free registration.

Enjoy knitting :)

Hi. You've chosen a good simple project to start with. I'd buy a book on how to knit - there are lots, quite cheap, or you might even be able to download for free - and then I'd go into your local woolshop and ask them to recommend a suitable yarn and needles - probably a pair of medium-sized needles (4mm or 5mm) as they're pretty quick to knit with but not so big to be uncomfortable to work with - and a yarn that won't show if you make mistakes with tension until you've got used to it. In fact your local yarn shop might run classes - knitting's got quite popular lately and many shops are running classes for beginners.

Or you could try asking a member of the older generation - mothers and aunts and grandmothers - because their generation often *had* to knit because it was cheaper and/or they were taught how to do it at school. Hope that helps and good luck - have fun.

Thereare just two kinds of stitches that comprise every possible style of knitting....you need to know how to do the "knit stitch", and the "purl stitch"....every style of knitting is done by making specific combinations of one and/or the other. You'd also need to know what size needles you need depending on the thickness of the yarn you're using.
A "learn to knit" video or booklet will help....the wideo might be preferable because you can actually SEE the process...rather than still-pictures. good luck
