It all depends on what you want it for, and how many things you want to hook up to it. Macs have come a long way, but is still not compatible with a lot of things. Windows is compatible with about 85% to 90% of the tools you will want. About 90% of the computers today use Windows.

The MacBook Pro is probably about the best laptop money can buy right now.
If you're doing design, video or any sort of graphical work, then the Mac is where its at - its the industry standard.
If you just want something to muck about with and play games on, then use Microsoft Windows. It will crash, you'll get viruses, and it will run slowly after a while - but that doesn't matter if you're only playing games!
If you want to do serious enterprise grade computing, run servers, databases and the like, then go with OpenSolaris or Linux. These operating systems can run on normal "PC" hardware. Linux can also run on Apple MAC hardware.
