For clothing, it's generally best to stick with solid colors -- no crazy patterns or stripes, which can be distracting. Neutral colors that aren't too bright, like pastels, blacks, browns, and greens are good. If it's a casual photo, I like the look of jeans paired with a simple top.

Think about the location of the photo, and what colors will look best in that setting. Is it indoors, in a casual setting, like someone's home? Is it outside, amongst lots of greenery and plants? Is it in a studio, against a neon purple backdrop? Different settings can make what you wear flop or shine, so just keep that in mind.

Keep the makeup simple and natural. Unless this is a glamorous fashion photo shoot, stay far away from dark eyeshadow, heavy eyeliner, and thick mascara -- it weighs down the eyes. Don't wear bright lipstick. Nice, natural pinks, peaches, and browns can look beautiful in photos (depending on your skin tone, of course), but above all, keep it simple.

white, pink, blue, and pastels stand out good against most backrounds. Avoid drastic eye makeup and dark lipstick, it has a tendency to make people look cheap. Also avoid bright blush. My best picture was in a pink sweater and jeans.

Try natural make up (browns, nudes, skin tones) and a sheer gloss. Also try simple, but pretty clothes. Never try anything too trendy, you may regret it in a couple of years.

You always want to go with something natural. What you see when you look in the mirror is exactly what you'll see when you get your photographs back.
