The solution centers in the definition of a 1N. solution. A 1N solution has one gram equivalent weight in 1 liter of solution. (1N = 1Eq/L) In this example we have 8.5g that make 0.5 L of a 0.1N solution. Another way of looking at it is that the 8.5g represents 0.05 equivalents (0.1Eq/L x0.5L). Then divide the number of grams by the number of equivalents to get the grams equivalent weight.
8.5g/0.05Eq = 170g/Eq
