In school bio they give you the various criteria of motion, reproduction, consumption, growth and stimulus response. There may be times when things we can accept as living do not fulfill all criteria - for instance a mule is infertile (because of different chromosome numbers in the parent species) and cannot reproduce - would anyone say it wasnt alive? Of course not.
Silicon nanomachines (I know it sounds far out but bare with me) may fulfil all of those critieria within a few decades even though they were made by human scientists and engineers - would they be alive? Some people would argue that they wouldnt have a soul to which I'd reply 'prove that you do'
Life at the end of the day is a label we give to replicating organic creatures on our planet. If you just want to know what the word means then there are some good answers from other people on here already. regards
