It was incredibly cramped and there would be no privacy. The slaves would lie down to provide the most room, with the men chained to each other. Children and women wouldn't be chained under most circumstances, the 'toilet' would have been a big bucket and hardly anybody would have been able to get to it so the whole place would smell disgusting. They would be given a pint a day of water and minimal food, and they would be forced to dance up on deck for exercise.
