All i know is that its some sort of sonar type thing between two computers.....one emits the ping and the response from the other is timed...but why? I get this a lot and it has the effect of delaying and transmissions or refresh rates on my PC....can it be stopped?

Yes, if you are using Windows XP you can go into your Windows Firewall settings and take off the check mard for ICMP requests which will stop your computer from replying to a ping request, and if you are using a broadband connection and using a router you should be able to go into the configuration screen and Disable ICMP requests which will have the same result.

Ping is an essential tool for network diagnosis and is completely harmless in itself.

You can test, how fast your connection to yahoo is, if you open up a command prompt (Start-->Run... then enter "cmd" and press OK).
Then type

ping www.yahoo.com

Your Windows PC will then send 4 Pings to yahoo, and will measure the time, how long it took for the ping to get to yahoo and back to your PC.

Although, pings themself are harmless, they are often used to find out, if a PC is there, to start an attack with a different program.

However, if you block Pings with a firewall, it is possible that a hacker will see this as an invitiation to hack, since it seems that there is something important hidden behind a firewall.

Just keep your PC updated, and use the Firewall built into Windows XP (make sure, you have Service Pack 2 installed).

Its when someone attempts to access an open Internet port on your machine. Mostly harmless but there are people out there that will try and "zombie" your machine. A good firewall will block it but there will always be people out there who ping.

Try zone alarm

Dude, pinging is when your engine starts making this funny noise. What you need is to bring it into the shop for a tune up.

It's to test the amount of lag between the two systems--it's absolutely harmless, a normal part of the internet, and doesn't affect anything you're doing--so you have nothing to worry about.

A firewall can block it. I doubt it would slow your machine down.
