How the football division system is setup? How many divisions are there and how are they different?

There are 8 divisions and 2 conferences. The conferences are the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference). There are 4 divisions in each, and they are called north, south, east and west. Before they expanded the league, the divisions were set up by geographic location. They are still set up this way for the most part, but some were not able to be set up this way.
