saw off an additional inch off the trunk and water water water. There are packets of tree preservative that are sold like the packets the florist sends with fresh flowers that help. Don't place the tree near a furnace register. Add more water every day!!! This is why I go for an artificial tree I hate getting those needles in my foot!!

your best bet with a real tree is go to a lot where you can cut your own this way it will be fresh and green from the start. when you bring it home, cut 1/2' off the base and put it immediately into your base with water. This prevents a scab of sap sealing off the capillary action of the tree.

Make sure your stand hold 3-5 litres of water as a fresh tree will drink 1 litre of water a day. You don't have to add anything to the water as the various things that people add don't do nothing to increase the life or flammability of the tree.

The most important thing is check the water level EVERY day. Some days the tree will drink more or less water depending on how hot the room is that the tree is in and the Length of time that you keep the tree lights on.

Steady watering is key, but some needles will always fall. Don't ever let the tree water dry up completely. The trunk bottom covers over with a film if you do, closes the pores and the tree can't suck up water.
Watering with sugar water or gingerale is said to keep a live tree fed, too.
If the tree isn't up yet, give the trunk a fresh cut so it can drink water. Buy a good, fresh, healthy tree. Source list gives an article on AC for more on buying fresh trees.

Make sure you keep it watered very well. The base should hold quite a lot of water, but check it often anyway. Those darned needles are just a part of having a real tree, but you can reduce those by making sure the tree is watered. You may want to put a few drops of plant food in as well, not too much, just follow the directions on the label.

Also, if you can find it a good home outdoors, your best bet may be to get a live tree and plant it outside somewhere.

Greener than what? A puss infected scab? A mint gum drop? Dr. Suess's eggs and ham?

The "little things" on the tree are called needles. These pine leaves fall off when the tree dies, which happens very quickly if you let it dry out. It's people like you who don't water their trees, layer it with hundreds of heat-creating tiny light bulbs, and then wonder why the house burned down in the middle of the night.

If you have a swimming pool, tie a rope around the base of tree and put tree in the pool. Tie off rope ( otherwise you will be going swiming to retrieve the tree. Leave in pool for one week, pull it out and let dry before bringing in the house. Needles will be soft and stay on until the end of JANUARY. I kid you not...

Well, you cannot keep the needles from falling. Just vacuum the floor once a day, and don't forget to give it water! An even better solution is to just buy a fake one. They last long, look realistic, and are WAY less work. I have one, it is awesome!
