Well, I'm not sure if your son's good enough to play Sonic games (but then again, I know a 3 year old relative who is already playing games like a pro). But if you DO decide to buy him Sonic games, keep in mind about these who particular ones:
Shadow the Hedgehog- Has guns. Has swearing. Lots and lots of swearing.
Sonic the Hedgehog (for the PS3 and xbox 360. Not the original one)- Has some scenes that might make your son sad. Has a human kissing Sonic on the mouth (no, not in that sense. she kisses him to revive him from the dead).

Both these games are rated "E 10+", for "Everybody 10 years and older".

The games that I DO reccomend are Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3, and if your kid has a wii (no, that's not an innuendo. it's the name of a new consol), you can get him Sonic and the Secret Rings when it comes out next yeat.

They do make cheap old school video games you hook up to the TV and it has 99 different games on it. It's a simple move and click control so even someone his age can play. BTW I've seen 3 year old play sonic on a PSP so I think he can do this. If that doesn't work go ahead with the DS and look for simple games that are E rated. If not DS then look at the older systems too. They have more games out and are a lot better on the budget. Put away the V smile and if he gets bored with that bring it back out after a while. A whole new experience! Good luck!

Get a wii and get sonic and the secret rings.
Its based on a story book so he will probably learn something in the process.
The controlls are simple and its filled with lush locations, and its proper sonic so theres no more stupid useless characters just sonic!
