I know this is slightly different than what the other answerers provided, but seeing as I don't use wireless, I'll give you how I set mine up.
I plugged in the ethernet cable, with the other end going to a router, and made sure my hubby's 'puter was turned on, and ran the internet wizard. It networked and set up the DSL so I didn't have to do any configuring, and all I do is double click Internet Explorer as my default browser.
You may be able to contact the provider of your service for tech support (over the phone, since you don't want a "truck roll fee") and they may be able to walk you through the set up as well, in real time.
Don't know if that helps, but good luck!

you need a router if you want to use both computers at once. A router is a box that plugs between the computers and the dsl modem that lets you plug more than one computer up to your dsl connection. You can use an ethernet cable just like the one your using between your desktop computer and dsl modem is using now for the laptop, but since most routers now have wireless built in, and most laptops have wireless built in, going wi-fi is a no brainer. get yourself a router, wi-fi enabled, i use a netgear at home and it works great. You can pick them up at Target or walmart for less than $50. hook it up between your desktop and dsl modem, set it up on your desktop first. Once you have it up and running, if your laptop is wi-fi enabled, most new ones are, boot it up and it will connect automatically for you. then you can take it anywhere in the house.
I can't tell you which brand router is best, i've only used netgear. some people swear netgear is awful, but mine works great. i have a 2 story brick home and can get on my laptop not only from anywhere in the house, but the neighbor's house across the street as well.
this is exactly the model i use and recommend:

does no longer advise attempting to percentage a dial-up connection. Will make an already slow connection even slower. frequently percentage a DSL or cable modem by a router or hub. i advise a router because it provides extra protection and connection thoughts. Router frequently has a outfitted-in firewall and different protection measures. some routers grant you both stressed and instant connections. Hubs are only a way of connecting computers at the same time. As for inn use with out wifi, your computing device needs a computing device T10/T100 ethernet card put in for a CAT 5 cable connection (severe % connection) or only a common telephone modem for dial-up conection. If the inn provided WiFi, you may wish a wifi card it truly is a T10/T100 card with a adjustable receiving antenna.
