91

Thats 6x6 (obviously)
+ 5x5 (2x2 squares)
+ 4x4 (3x3 squares)
+ 3x3 (4x4 squares)
+ 2x2 (5x5 squares)
+ 1x1 (6x6 squares)

And if you would please consider non-Euclidean spaces, there could be a few more.

i love problems like this. okay its a 6x6 square.

there are 36 1x1 squares
there are 25 2x2 squares
there are 16 3x3 squares
there are 9 4x4 squares
there are 4 5x5 squares
and there is 1 6x6 square

so, 36+25+16+9+4+1 = 91 squares in a 6x6 square.

Squares of 1x1 = 6x6 = 36
Squares of 2x2 = 5x5 = 25
Squares of 3x3 = 4x4 = 16
Squares of 4x4 = 3x3 = 9
Squares of 5x5 = 2x2 = 4
Squares of 6x6 = 1x1 = 1
Total = 36+25+16+9+4+1 = 91

Similarly, if the square is nxn, then find the sum of the squares from 1 to n.

1, as 6x6 are the dimensions of the square. It doesn't mean that the square is made up of 6 squares wide, by six squares high (hence 36). It's like saying a wall is 20x10. There is only one wall, not 200 little walls.

However you could say that there are infinite squares, as an infinite number of squares would fit in the 6x6 square

6x6 what?
The number of squares could be infinite.
How big are these squares?
How big is the 6x6 square?
THE ANSWER IS...... 1 SQUARE measuring 6x6.

Judging from the amount of "thumbs downs" I got, I can see that the world of mathematics is going have to do some heavy recruiting. Ahem.....

You've only mentioned one square and you haven't mentioned the unit of measurement or if it is also comprised of smaller squares. If the 6x6 square was composed of 1x1 squares, there would be 36 squares.
