Coats and Clark yarn and Lion Brand Yarn both have good free crochet patterns and also have explanations of the different types of stitches used in their patterns.

I like Lion Brand Yarn's website - they have good illustrated instructions on how to start crocheting. The patterns are designed for their yarns, but if you're good with math or at least a calculator, you can figure out how much yarn you would need to substitute.

I also like Crochet Pattern Central. It's like a big clearinghouse of patterns - they have them in a lot of different categories.

I went to my local craft store and took a knitting class last winter - - for about $35 I had all my supplies to get started.
Michaels, AC Moore and Rag Shop offer these classes and I truly recommend them.
I plan to take the crocheting class this winter.

This is my FAVORITE website for free crochet patterns on line:
http://home.inreach.com/marthac/links.html
This site categorizes all the patterns so it is very easy to find what you are looking for. And one of the categories is called Crochet Stitches.
Enjoy! :-)
