Try stopping some background applications (firewalls etc.) or processes (be cautious with this as it can stop your machine, needing a reboot). You can access these by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys.

Your short pauses is called "lag"
Your computer is not powerful or fast enough to keep up with the demands of the game (well, it can, because you can play it, but it is not the best way to play it)
It may be good if you got a little more RAM
if you don't want to
before your game
just click Ctrl>Alt>Delete
go to you task manager
and click on the tab that says Processes
close some programs that you KNOW are not needed
NEVER close anything that has a User name of Local Service or System
those run your computer, if u close it, you are doomed
also, don't close your explorer.exe program in there
that runs your startbar (found out by trial and error)
close programs such as
iexplore.exe (internet explorer windows)
ObjectDock
WZQKPICK.exe
SetPoint
LogitechDesktopManager
LogiTray
you may not have some of the programs listed
but u get it
if you don't know what a certain program does, don't click it
or click it when you have the time to restart your computer (and have everything saved)
also, you can close your Spyware software and Virus protection
that uses alot of the computer's energy
the more programs you close, the faster i will get for you to play games

You need to get a better video card! The requirements on the box are just minimum requirments to make the game play. To make it play in TOP quality, a better video card is the way to go!

You have the minimum requirements, a 256 mb card will take less hits on your system. Crtl-Atl-Del and see which programs are hitting the memory the most.

try to close all programs runnings in the background, deactivate your anti virus (be sure you're not playing on-line).
But unless you're using a dual-core processor , then there's no problem shutting off some programs in your background.
if you have enought budget, try using AMD Athlon 64 processor.
Good luck!
