It depends on the person. I would probably like to have a home with my partner before marrying them, and I don't think that is a bad thing. I think that it is important to be serious about marriage and not rush into it. If you buy a home together and it doesn't work out, you can just sell the home. Much easier then a divorce.

If you've been together 8 years and all he can come up with is that you are the best looking fittest girl he's ever seen then it probably is never going to happen.
You need to cut your losses.
