Ummm.... I give my pets the best life they can possibly have. They get plenty of time to cuddle and love, and they also get plenty of time to well act like the animals they are. My bird and bunnies are out of their cages as much as possible. Which is almost all the time considering I stay home with my son. My kitty is allowed to go out and come in so he can take care of his kitty needs. Some people just take in to many pets, usually out of love and compassion only to not be able to care for them properly. There is such a thing as being a good pet owner and one that cares but cannot afford it. And others are just absolutely cruel. We take care of our pets good, they get the right food and time for love. I sometimes prefer the company of animals to humans, because animals love you no matter what, people on the other hand can be evil and mean spirited.

Wow. It's too early in the morning for such strong opinions :)

Most people have pets for the companionship. They don't treat them as "surrogate people". Personally, I have a few friends that I hang out with, and don't expect my dog or cats to replace human friendship. It's important to understand that they are animals and not "fur kids".

Dogs were domesticated tens of thousands of years ago by the first humans. It was a mutual arrangement; wolves discovered that by hanging around the human's camps, they could get a lot of scrap food, and humans discovered that the wolves kept wild animals away, and they provided a warning system for when others approached. Over time, humans further domesticated animals to where they really can't survive well without us.
I wouldn't call it enslavement :) I know many pets who live out cushier lives than their human guardians. They get the highest quality food, they get lots of companionship and exercise, and they get medical attention whenever they so much as sneeze.

If we didn't domesticate animals than society would have never progressed at all. Without the cow and the horse, we would be still living in caves! While animals do have feelings, I doubt that they consider our treatment to be "slavery". They simply don't know any other life. I bet that if most of them were able to make the choice, they'd chose the life of a pet rather than a wild animal. My dog has had opportunities to escape (it's not like I keep them prisioner) but she doesn't. Why? Is it possible that she'd rather be my pet than live her life out in the cold, unforgiving wild?

The doig (canis familiaris) is unknown in the wild (apart from feral dogs), so it seems to have done well out of its slavery! same for cats (wild version pushed to margins of europe, domestic version curled up in a nice comfy chair), chickens, goats, horses etc.

Treating pets like people is just out of loneliness and sentiment. No harm done there, and it can be beneficial to have a pet - they've been shown to reduce stress, and some hospitals arrange to have animals in for this reason.

I suppose this could apply to Tony Blair, he seems to think the indigenous people of the UK are there to act like circus animals and jump through hoops whenever he snaps his fingers.
