Well, the first thing you need to understand is it's not really a cactus. It's a succulent. Therefore, keeping it damp, but not too wet, is important. Water it until the water comes out of the drain hole into the tray and then don't water again until the soil is dry (feel it everyday). Indirect light. A couple of months before Christmas, move it to the basement or lower light area for a few days, bring it back out, and it should bloom. Also, use Miracle Gro (fertilizer) every few waterings.
