Most dictionaries give the phonetic transcriptions of words on how to prounounce it, some give indication of where the stress of a syllable is. Does anyone know where i can get a dictionary like this, i need it for studying linguistics particularly phonology.

I would recommend the Oxford English Dictionary. Though if you're in the US, perhaps there is one more suited to American pronunciation and word stress?

Most dictionaries give an indication of where the stress is, even compact dictionaries. Some do this using accent marks, others separate the syllables and then put the stressed syllable in bold type. I use the Oxford American Dictionary, Heald Colleges Edition which is a very good compact dictionary. It shows pronunciation and stress very well.
It is inexpensive (paperback) and is in Barnes and Noble or Borders. I am sure they have it in hardback too.

Encarta Encyclopaedia 2006 comes with a computer dictionary which is exceedingly useful, and does have the stress syllables and how to pronounce them. I use this dictionary for absolutely everything.

For instance, for the word phonolgy, it has:

phonology [fə nólləji, fō nólləji]
(plus the meaning etc) You just need to use the pronunciation key to figure out what it means. For every word it also has a very handy feature will allows you to play a recording of what it should sound like, pronounced properly in english.

Stress on the syllables can be shown by different ways. One of the simple ways is to indicate it is to emphasise the syllable shown in CAPITAL letters. For example: Moonlight = MOON.' light Earnest = UR. ' nest. Dead = DED'. Killed = KIL.' d. The best book for learning good accent is "Words most often Mis.spelled and Mis-pronounced"--By Ruth Gleeson and James Colvin. If you wish to improve your Vocabulary, read "All about Words" - by Nuremberg & Rosenblum.
