Can you disguise the smell by lighting a match like the lady did on a plane a few days back?

First question? No. Fart could never be replaced by flat; not in my vocabulary anyway.

Second? It depends on the volume and odoriferous content of the fart. While a match will disguise some; cigar or cigarette smoke even more, there are some farts that will not be olifactorily erased by the lighting of a match.

In the words of my old Irish Granny, "wherever ye be, let yer wind blow free!"

Fa*t: is 13c. a very old word. considered vulgar... to expel intestinal gases from the anus.

flatulence: 1711. the quality or state of...
flatulency: 1660. : flatuence
flatulent: 1599: to blow wind. Marked by or affected with gas generated in the intestine or stomach.
Flatus: 1651: gas generated in the stomach or bowels.

I think that flat... was used so much back then the 'slang' for it became fart. Currently, when someone says flat... I think of a flat surface or an apartment.
Hope this helps.

Flatulence is different from fat even though both tend to distend the belly. Flatulence is a temporary condition caused by wind generated by decomposition of food in the belly which is caught within it and is not able to esape giving rise to some distension of the stomach. The moment we fart the discomfort susbsides as also the stomach. The fat is more permanent and gets stored in the stomach walls almost permanently misshaping it. It can subside only with exercise and dieting and then very slowly
