WOW. what a question. what genre? I suppose jaco pastorious has got to feature as a top bass player as a lot of bassists have copied his style. then you've got the king of slappers Stanley Clarke, who invented the slap. what about Jonas helborg he has a variety of different styles and teqniques also plays indian styles.
perhaps one of my fav' is Wojtek Pilichowski from poland he is so funky. so who is the best? well thats an individual choice and can only be chosen on popularity.

John Entwistle, no contest. He defined bass playing and took it to the forefront as an instrument. Never content with the usual dum dum dum....in the background he weaved a melodic tapestry in and out of Keith Moon's drumming and Pete Townshend's ecstatic rhythms on the guitar. The bassists mentioned post 1970's all owe The Ox a nod of if not reverence at least an appreciation of defining what the bass is capable of doing in music.

Sorry, but all these people are F***ING RETARDED. Les Claypool is the only answer that would be accepted in the music business. Everyone should be slapped! If you want a name, look up Victor Wooten. Hands down, no contest, the best bassist ever.
Still laughing at Shavo, Lemmy, etc. For God sake, Daron Malakian had to record bass parts for these last albums because Shavo couldn't....and the best parts are simple!

Please god, dont say Flea just cos he's the only bassist you've ever heard doing a solo. There are many many more great bass players, that Flea is shamed by...who can say who's the best but some greats are:
Charles Mingus,
Stanley Clarke,
Squarepusher a.k.a. Tom Jenkinson (he makes super-fast drum and bass, but he plays absurdly smooth bass over it)
Les Claypool from Primus.
The list goes on, but it is definately not lemmy or flea, k?

Depends how you're defining it. A couple of favourites are Jaco Pastorius and John 'The Ox' Entwhistle. Oh yeah, and Danny Thompson who played with Pentangle and then on all those classic John Martyn albums. But the list could go on...

Though I don't like the band especially, it has to be John Entwhistle of The Who - surging, plunging, all round the fretboard stuff, while still keeping the band driving forward.
