The colours of the festive season relate to the pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice. We celebrate the re-birth of the Sun God from the Goddess as the days start to get longer. Green is for fertility; the red for the sign of a woman's fertility, menstual blood; the white for the sign of a man's fertility, semen. For the same reason we decorate our houses with holly (red berries and green leaves) and mistletoe (white berries and green leaves).

And in England 'Father Christmas' or 'Old Sir Christmas' always wore a green suit - as has been said by others the red suit was an invention of the Coca Cola company in the late 19th century

well actually- Santa's suit was a product of Coke! In the first dutch portrayals of Santa he would have a yellow or green suit, but when he was brought to America by immigrants and popularised by "Twas the Night Before Christmas" his suit became the Coke colours.
Weird and unsettling.

No joke. Fat, jolly Santa -- the guy with the red suit and cap, the thick black belt and sooty boots, the rosy cheeks, the luminous eyes, the brighter-than-white teeth -- is the spawn of an advertising campaign by Coca-Cola back in the 1930s.

Santa was invented long after we started celebrating Christmas. If you call the holiday Christmas, you should be looking to Christ and His birth - that's the original point.

Red and green are festive. Most of the winter holidays have to do with beating the winter blahs.
