Gandhiji was a good person. As the English saying goes:
"A good man in an evil society seems the greatest villain of all."
That's probably why he was assassinated.

Gandhiji was killed by a Hindu fanatic , belonging to the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) , because he preached amity and brotherhood between Hindus and all other sections of our society , particularly Muslims.

NATHU RAM GODSE killed THE FATHER OF THE NATION Shri. MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI because he (NATHURAM ) was a HINDU Fanatic and thought that the FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT is a compromise that GANDHI played with THE HINDU NATION by aggreeing to SPLIT it into TWO NATIONS - India and Pakistan to be headed by THE INDIAN HINDU LEADER J.L.NEHRU and THE MUSLIM LEAGUE LEADER Mohd. Ali Jinnah , both these leaders were only wishing to have the CROWN and so was the compromise and the BRITISH rulers played foul and on the shoulders of GANDHI.
People suspect that MK GANDHI knew alongwith Lord Mountbatten that JINNAH was suffering and will die soon and that the SPLIT of the NATION could be saved. THUS the hardliners tried to VENT out their ANGER by silencing him forever.

a combination of factors murdered the mahatma - he was cashed because of his extended passionate cause for the muslims. his worldview was that the hindus were always villians inspite of what was happening during partition. he had outlived his utility to jawaharlal nehru who had by then ururped the leadership and this guy was only a moral pain in the @#% for him. he wud have certainly put his foot down for nehru's look-west (remember he was called the only english-desi) and insisted on swadeshi which was anathema to nehru dispensation and his dream of dynasty. so only copious tears were shed by the political class and no serious effort was made to find out why godse pulled the trigger or if he was made to pull the trigger by someone else. this was the precursor to mamny more political murderes which would take place in subsequent years.

Umteen books are there for study of this aspect and the forum does not warrant research rendition. After all, statesmen were bound to be 'assassinated' due to various reasons. Even today's leaders boast of shed their last blood for the cause of something. Ultimately death is inevitable buddy.(not philosophy)
