Impossible to determine because technology creates new terms on a daily basis. If you count all the different scientific and technical jargons for every known activity that has a specialized vocabulary, the number would easily exceed 500,000 and is probably in excess of a million.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary there are indeed a half million words (it can be up to 650,000 depending on where you get your data) in use today with an additional half million in scientific, technical and medical terms.

The average educated person has a vocabulary of 20,000 words yet uses only 2,000 a week.

However, from what I recall from college, only some 10,000 are commonly used.
