I take that to mean the bands who are/were the undisputed masters of their art? Well, my contenders would be

1. The Beatles (most influential)
2. Slayer (most ferocious)
5. Pink Floyd (most innovative)
4. The Smiths (most distinctive)

And the final accolade goes to:
5. The Killers (most overrated)

The ultimate... this is going to be tricky.

I would say that probably the ultimate band was Queen. They are not my favourite band of all time (they are in my top ten though) and they are probably not the best in any one field. But - Queen were unique in one way. All four members were fantastically talented in their own right.
Does anyone seriously say the Beatles were all equally talented? Or that Iron Maiden was as good without Bruce Dickinson? No. Most bands are one or two great performers with a competent group of musicians with them.
John Deacon wrote "I Want To Break Free", "Another One Bites the Dust" and loads more hits - he plays the bass. How many other bands have a bassist who wrote hits? Not many.
Roger Taylor (drums) wrote "Radio Ga Ga", and "It's a Kind of Magic". Brian May has written loads of songs too. As for Freddie Mercury - a legend!

So even though there are some bands I prefer to listen to (Jethro Tull, Motorhead), some bands that feature a more skilled guitarist (Rainbow, Deep Purple), a better drummer, had more hits, or better lyrics (Manic Street Preachers) I still think of Queen as the ultimate band because it is the only band I know of where all the members were individually fantastic.
