"M" is BMW's sports-tuning division; M-power is their slogan.

BMW puts out an M variant of almost all their models (3, 5, Z). M cars are always rear wheel drive and manual transmissions. The engines are about as race-tuned as are commercially available. Red lines are typically higher than standard engines (8000 rpm currently across the line), and engine output is some of the highest in the industry (the M3 engine was the highest hp/displacement engine on the market when it came out). All the M cars are also normally aspirated. Suspension and brakes are tuned to match, and styling is enhanced subtly.

As for transmission, the e36 M3 was the first car to use SMG (SMG I), which is an electro-hydraulic clutch mated to a standard transmission. This is F1 technology first commercially marketed by Ferrari (their F1 transmission) - shifting is accomplished via F1-style paddles behind the steering wheel. SMG I was only available in europe. The latest M3, the e46, had SMG II - a 6-speed Getrag gear box mated to the same clutch. The latest 5-series M car (M5) was originally only available with SMG III, a 7-speed version. There was an outcry for a standard 6-speed option, so I believe BMW is offering a 6-speed M5 now.

There have been 3 5-series M cars. I'm not sure about the first, but the second was a 390-odd hp V8, and the current is a 500-hp V10.

Most answers in here are entirely incorrect. The 323is has a 2.5l Inline 6 M52B25 engine, which produces 168hp. The power restrictions, are mostly due to its single pipe exhaust, while most BMWs have dual pipes from the headers back. The 323is is still sport oriented, but is going to have softer suspension, smaller brakes, and will have LESS WEIGHT than the M3. The '99 E36 M3 has a 240hp 3.2l Inline 6 S52b32 engine. The m3 has firmer sport/track oriented suspension, which includes different bushings, control arms, sway bars, etc. The car will also have "Vader" sport seats, black headliner, M-tech body kit, larger brakes, Limited slip differential, and larger staggered wheels. The car also has additional welding to make the chassis stiffer.

I have a 2002 (E39 body style) M5, and I agree with most of "M3Owner" said, except for the part about ALL being naturally aspirated. There are 4 M5 versions: E28 (1984-1988), E34 (1988-1995), E39 (1998-2003), and E60 (2004-now).

These are all factory-equipped with high performance drivelines and suspension components, as well as interior accents; and they come from the factory naturally aspirated.

Several aftermarket supercharger options exist for the E39, bringing it from 394hp to over 600hp. One tuner built an engine that produced almost 1000hp on the dyno - but it's too much and smokes the rear tires; so the owner "de-tuned" it to 700hp. Search Youtube for "PhillyM5" to see videos.

the M cars are BMW's performance models. They are usually much different from the normal model of the same car. They have more powerful engines, different gear boxes, different suspension, and often times the interior is special for the M model with the ///M Badges placed here and there.

M is a reworked, after market engine. Very powerful. More hp, better 0-60.
