Supply and Demand~

2006-12-08 23:27:20 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Sony is actually losing about 200-300 dollars on each PS3 as it is very expensive to produce.

The main CPU is called the Cell processor and it was created by IBM. It is pretty powerful for a consumer entertainment device as similar PC computers would run over $1000. The Graphics card is also very expensive but the real big ticket item is the Blue Ray Disc reader. Sony expects to push this new High Def DVD format via the adoption of the PS3 into homes. Individual Blue Ray disc players are mega expensive so they are trying to make you think that what you're getting is quite the deal...game console, blue ray disc, internet access and large hard drive for all your entertainment(music/movies).

I'm going to wait another year before I get one.

The ones one ebay and from private sellers are so expensive because the demand it about 5 times higher than the supply. The machine itself it very expensive because of high research and development costs, and the Blu ray dvd player capabilities of the machine. A stand alone blu ray player can cost upwards of 800 bucks itself. Sony is actually going to be losing money on the ps3 for a long time. They hope to make it up in game sales and sales of other products

All of the hardware involved cost them a whole lot of money to create & produce. They need to make it back. They're losing money as it is. I'm not a fan of Sony, but I do my research. The January '07 issue (#165) of Game Informer reports (quoting iSuppli), "Materials and manufacturing costs for the 20GB model exceed the SRP ($499 U.S.) by $306.85, and the 60GB ($599 U.S.) by $241.35". Yes, they are losing that much on each unit sold. They're givin' 'em away! Buy a 360, you'll be much happier. Rumor has it Sony's lost (or will lose) more exclusivity rights, especially mentioning MGS4. Yup, 'they' say that Konami is forcing the port. People are jumping off the PS3 wagon over to the 360. You get more for your money...on everything.

because of the blue ray disc player in the machine that is key to its function. The blue ray player gives the PS3 all that extra graphics and memory power that it needs. At the moment a blue ray disc player costs around a thousand pounds so it's no wonder that the PS3 is so expensive. The price is actualy a bargin!

It costs a lot to put in the new Cell Processor, plus the Blu-Ray player and all that junk. Since all the components cost so much to make, they have to set it at a high price to even have a chance of making a profit, which still probably won't happen for a couple years.

the technology in the PS3 is ridiculous, its a games console!

do Sony actually think that it will work?, I mean when i got my PS2, it wasnt long until I had to replace it, then within 2 weeks I was replacing the replacement. I'm now on my 4th.

I've lost all faith in Sony now and a Nintendo Wii will soon occupy the space next to my TV

I say that it's because of the Blu-Ray. Because it's better, it costs more. So add that in to a probably around $200 system, and you get a PS3.

Everything is expensive when it first comes out - I expect Nintendo's Wii will cost a packet, as well (in other words, it may be a Wii bit too expensive!!!). You'd think, wouldn't you, that they'd be capturing the Christmas market & lowering their prices a bit, but it's all about profits these days.

Blu-Ray drives cost about £200, so if you want the best of technology you have to pay a high price...
