the folks here are right about ultimate derivation, though the phrase has been used in software development for decades.

It does mean building your own software, rather than buying something off the shelf.

in our case, all our software derives from code I wrote starting in '95, though I haven't coded since late '99 after writing what amounts to version 2. (all our tech people are smarter than me.)

It comes from the practice of carrying loose tobacco and papers instead of pre-rolled cigarettes. It means you make it yourself.

back in the old days they didn't have rerolled cigarettes so if you wanted one you'd have to roll ur own. watch an old western odds are youl see some old cowboy roll his own, yippiekiaaa !
