Well, it depends on surcomstants. Heres is a list of some ideas of what the problem is or might be:
.(First, go to this site to see & to know, http://www.learnthat.com/courses/computer/windowsxp/img/fulldesktop-sm.jpg).
1. It could be that the volume is not on. To do so go to the Taskbar and click on the icon of volume (which is a speaker-like thing) (http://www.spaceg.com/images/icon_speaker.gif, go to this page to see the icon) located in the System Tray.
2. The icon may be missed placed. so go to control pannel and go to volume settings (I may not know this part, yet).
3. Last, but note leased. You may be working in "Safe Mode". Becuase when I was in Safe Mode the Icon was not there. I realy don't know yet how to get the icon in Safe Mode (well, not yet, atleast), but I know how to get out of Safe Mode. Just Restart the computer. But if not, do these steps I put: First, go to Start on the Taskbar and click on the button that says, "Turn Off Computer". Then after that a little centered menu will come with 3 difrent buttons on it. Click on the one that says, "Restart". When restarting takes place then wait until Windows starts up again. Then quickly press the key that says, on the keyboard, "F8". If time is not corect then windows will "start normally" by default (which is a good thing, unless...). But if it dose not start normally and still gos into Safe Mode, then follow these steps throw: once you do that (in pressing "F8") a menu will apear in stead of the usual screen. Click on the one that says, "Start Normally". This will start things normally and not be in "Safe Mode" (Unless...)!
I hope this (or these) help in some way. If you need better help check out a book on Windows XP (Like, "Windows XP For Dummies" from the For Dummies series. I think this book will be very useful. Also check out there website at ForDummies.com.).

Check the speaker cord, or go to the the volume control in the control panel and check. Just the other day I had that problem the cord had came out of the Jack and I wasn't getting any sound.

you probably have it MUTED. Look by your time in the lower right of the window- do you see a SPEAKER Icon? is there a red circle & slash by it? double click on it to open your speaker properties. Clear any MUTE check boxes that have a check-mark in them. You can also slide up the volume. I hope you checked the speakers to see if they were plugged in to the speaker port (Green) and have the speakers powered on. Worst case- your driver for your sound card is corrupt and needs to be reloaded

check the speakers. if it happens intermittently it may be a dodgy wire.
Check
Start>ControlPanel>Sounds&Audio devices
check the volume is up and not on mute
if that doesn't work you might try updating your sound driver or something
