Please remember that The Stone Age in no way refers to where a person slept, such as a cave. The Stone Age means that the peoples used rocks as tools, as The Bronze Age refers to the developement of the skill to fashion tools of bronze. Caves that were used as a dwelling place that were safe from the larger predators were very likely hard to locate, but those that were located have left us with a glimpse into the daily lives and possible religious beliefs and hunting practices of the earlier hominids.

We cannot know for certain that skin shelters or nests of sticks, leaves and other gathered materials were utilized by these hunter/gatherer types, but observation of other species, such as the gorilla, and the peoples that still lead this sort of life in various places, such as Africa and the jungles of the American continents, lead the scientists to believe this a possibility. There is physical and remaining proof in several places on the European continent that at least a few made and used the same shelters year after year, although possibly not the entire year, from mammoth bones.

Try and remember that what you think of as the stone age is called the Paleolithic by archaeologists, and it lasted well over a million years. It's not really known where people lived in the early stone age, but in the latter part of it, many people lived in the houses or temporary structures they built. Some people also lived in caves. These people probably made it a point to stay near caves if they wanted to sleep in them.

Most people didn't actually live in caves but would live in movable semi permanent structures like tents made from hide or huts made from turf, some like at Skara Brae even made stone houses and complexes. This was because most were nomadic hunter/ gatherers and needed to follow their food supplies.
Caves were often the homes of large animals with big pointy teeth that liked the taste of humans.
The reason that many people think that stone age man lived in caves is because archeaological remains would often survive longer in the relatively dry and sterile environment of a cave whereas a tent of animal skins would of rotted away long ago.
Caves were often used for ritual and religion as you can see from the wonderful cave art that survives to this day and shows the close bond between humans and the natural world.

not many people actually lived in caves as there weren't many.

if they did prefer living in caves, they would have stayed close to their community cave and a few would occasionally venture out to discover new land and caves.
