i checked out the original ones in the V & A museum the material looked a bit like interfacing, i am doing a textile project at my school, any ideas.

I don't think you are far wrong quite honestly. I lived through the times and the fashions of the 60's and the best I can describe the material is that was pretty much like the stuff used to make disposable knickers today - a very thin weave which contains polyester fibre as well as more natural ("paper") material.

It was quite strong and you could wash it if you were care full. It was a cross between a `J` cloth and a good quality paper napkin. They came in lots of colours. The style was a pretty basic `shift` but with a pair of scissors you could re-style it yourself. They were just a "fad" not many girls had them, those that did used them mainly for wearing at the disco or for the beach.
I seem to recall that one of the glossy monthly women's magazines gave one away free with their mag. one month.
